By any chance, are you guys playing the Inform port of Zork?  If so, I can
tell you that it's horribly buggy and I got stuck in the same spot.  Also,
I would have objects disappear even when they were in a place where the
thief shouldn't have been able to get to them.  AI even would have
immobile objects start appearing in weird places like the heads on poles
going into the attic, or the mirrors in the mirror rooms vanishing.  In
short, avoid the Inform port.
