Well never mind!  I figured it out.  Teaches me not to cry wolf!  Anyway,
I finished the game and I found one quibble with the ending.

It makes perfect sense that you are not permitted to take the original
house key back in time with you, and the crystal.  However, why is it that
you can just walk into your house and leave the time machine in the
clearing?  For my own satisfaction, I ended up setting the time machine to
go 20 years into the future and sending it there before entering the
house.  Now, I'm fiddling with the easter egg Choose your own adventure
book at the end.  Neat bonus to give the player an idea of what the author
used to do in the early days.
