Looks like a bug then.  'read lid' gives "A placard claims there is an
interesting inscription on the inside of the lid.", just like 'read
inscription', 'examine coffin', etc.  And yes, I did open it!  

I know what to do with the coffin, I just thought I ought to mention
it!
